Alfred State Baseball Secures First Win of Season Against Brockport
Virginia Beach, VA – The Alfred State College baseball team earned its first victory of the 2026 season on February 28th, defeating Brockport 7-6. The Pioneers now hold a 1-10 record.
Game Recap: Alfred State 7 – Brockport 6
Brockport took an early lead in the first inning when Josh Indek scored on a passed ball, establishing a 1-0 advantage. Alfred State responded in the fourth inning, plating five runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Brockport battled back in the bottom of the fourth, with RBI hits from Kyle Blake and Steven Merkel contributing to a three-run inning. The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the sixth, as Matthew Coon hit a solo home run to tie the game, followed by Josh Indek scoring on another passed ball, making it 6-5 in favor of Brockport.
But, Alfred State secured the win with a two-run home run in the seventh inning, taking a 7-6 lead. Their bullpen then held Brockport scoreless in the final three innings.
Blake Fortunato led Brockport at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. Josh Indek reached base three times with two hits and two runs scored. Nick Ianniello pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out two batters.
Virginia Wesleyan Defeats Brockport 11-5
In the earlier game on February 28th, Virginia Wesleyan defeated Brockport 11-5. Brockport initially took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI groundout from Evan Brock.
Brockport extended its lead to 5-1 through the fifth inning, with RBIs from James Dixon, Michael Norton and a solo home run by Evan Brock. However, Virginia Wesleyan rallied, scoring ten unanswered runs, including an eight-run fifth inning, to secure the 11-5 victory.
Cole Grazioplene went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Brockport. Michael Norton drew two walks and finished 1-for-2 with a double. Evan Brock hit his third home run of the season and reached base three times with two RBIs.
