US and Israel Launch Attack on Iran, Raising Global Tensions

A joint military operation by the United States and Israel against Iran commenced on Saturday, triggering widespread concern and escalating geopolitical tensions. The attack, beginning in Tehran and expanding across the country, has resulted in civilian casualties, including a tragic strike on a primary school in southern Iran.

Reported Attacks and Casualties

Iranian authorities report that a primary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, was struck during the operation, resulting in the deaths of at least 148 people, primarily schoolgirls. Approximately 170 schoolgirls were present at Shajareh Tayebeh primary school when it was hit at 10:45 am local time. Rescue operations are ongoing, with hopes of finding survivors trapped under rubble.

The Minab judiciary confirmed 148 fatalities and 95 injuries. State television footage depicts the destroyed school and distraught parents in the courtyard. Iran has condemned the attack as a “war crime” and an example of US and Israeli “atrocities,” with President Masoud Pezeshkian labeling it “savage” and “inhumane.”

The US military acknowledged reports of civilian harm resulting from the operation, stating they are taking the reports seriously, and investigating. Attacks also targeted residential neighborhoods in Lamerd, with reports of at least 15 civilian deaths and numerous injuries. Several neighborhoods in Tehran were also targeted.

Evacuations and Displacement

Residents of Tehran have been urged to evacuate the capital if possible and seek safer areas, as the joint operation continues. Roads leading from Tehran to coastal cities along the Caspian Sea are congested with residents fleeing potential attacks on residential buildings.

This operation follows a period of heightened tensions between Iran and the US/Israel. During the June 2025 war with Israel, centered on Tehran, officials reported over 8,500 damaged buildings, 650 completely destroyed, and more than 1,000 civilian deaths nationwide.
