Ty Simpson Shines at NFL Combine, Challenging Fernando Mendoza’s Top Draft Status

This year’s presumptive No. 1 overall pick, Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, opted not to work out at the NFL Scouting Combine, but Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson seized the opportunity to impress scouts and potentially solidify his position as a first-round draft pick.

Simpson’s Combine Performance Boosts Draft Stock

Entering the draft, the quarterback class was largely viewed as lacking depth, with Mendoza standing alone as a surefire first-round selection. Simpson’s performance at the NFL Combine on Saturday, March 1, 2026, has dramatically altered that narrative. He may have locked in his status as a first-round pick, according to reports.

NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah initially expressed reservations about Simpson’s potential, stating he didn’t witness him as a top-15 pick. Although, Simpson’s showing during the combine significantly changed that assessment, with Jeremiah visibly impressed by Simpson’s passing ability.

Mendoza Sits Out, Simpson Takes Center Stage

Although Mendoza chose to sit out the on-field drills, Simpson took full advantage of the spotlight. Mendoza was present at the combine, supporting his fellow competitors and speaking with former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Despite not participating in testing, Mendoza remains the presumptive No. 1 overall selection.

Broader Combine Highlights

The combine wasn’t solely focused on quarterbacks. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love delivered a complete workout, reinforcing his status as a top-three prospect regardless of position. Wide receivers also showcased impressive speed, with seven players recording a 40-yard dash time of 4.35 seconds or better.

However, not all prospects impressed. A couple of larger receivers with first-round potential reportedly underperformed, potentially impacting their draft positions.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft

The 2026 NFL Draft will capture place from April 23–25 in Pittsburgh. With Simpson’s strong combine performance, he has emerged as a player to watch, potentially being selected as early as the Top 10 picks. At least two quarterbacks have been taken in the first round every year except one over the past decade.
