Rivian Launches ‘RAD’ – The Adventure Department Pushing Electric Vehicle Limits

Rivian has formalized its commitment to extreme vehicle testing and innovation with the launch of the Rivian Adventure Department (RAD). This dedicated team is focused on pushing the boundaries of its electric vehicles in challenging environments, translating real-world insights into production features and solidifying Rivian’s position in the emerging electric off-road market.

From Prototype Testing to Official Department

The roots of RAD trace back to early Rivian prototype testing, notably during the filming of “Long Way Up,” where two R1T trucks were driven from South America to Los Angeles 1. This experience highlighted the value of subjecting vehicles to demanding conditions. Since then, Rivian vehicles have participated in events like the Rebelle Rally, where the R1T became the first EV to win the longest off-road rally in the United States in 2023 1. Rivian also set and subsequently reset the production electric truck record at Pikes Peak in both 2023 and 2024 1.

Translating Extreme Testing into Vehicle Features

RAD’s work directly influences Rivian’s software and performance tuning. For example, the Desert Rally mode was developed using data gathered from the Rebelle Rally, while lessons learned at Pikes Peak contributed to real-time tuning capabilities 1. Jeff Hammoud, Rivian’s Chief Design Officer, stated that RAD embodies the “passion that defines Rivian” and represents a commitment to continuous improvement and adventure 1.

Increased Competition in the Electric Off-Road Segment

Rivian initially held a dominant position in the electric off-road market. However, competition is increasing. Mercedes-Benz now offers an electric G-Wagen, and Land Rover is preparing to launch an electric Range Rover 1. Jeep has the Wagoneer S and Recon models in development, and Volkswagen’s Scout Motors is planning to release a rival vehicle to the R1 models starting in 2028 1. Rivian and Volkswagen even share a technology partnership 1.

Rivian Adventure Network Expansion

Supporting Rivian’s adventure-focused approach is the Rivian Adventure Network (RAN), with charging stations strategically located near outdoor destinations. A new RAN site opened in Shoshone, California, on the edge of Death Valley National Park, featuring six DC fast chargers, including three trailer-friendly options 3.

The creation of RAD signals Rivian’s dedication to maintaining its edge in the electric adventure vehicle market, ensuring its vehicles are not only technologically advanced but also capable of tackling the most challenging terrains. 1
