Antihero Studios Secures $4.5M Seed Funding to Disrupt Mobile Gaming
Antihero Studios, a mobile game developer founded by former Supercell and King staff, has raised $4.5 million in a seed funding round co-led by A16z Speedrun and Laton Ventures . The funding will fuel the development and launch of their debut title, Misfitz, an extraction shooter designed to foster social engagement among players.
From Supercell to Startup: The Genesis of Antihero Studios
Antihero Studios was established in 2024 by Brice Laville Saint-Martin, formerly the creative director at Supercell, Frank Yan, a senior game designer from Brawl Stars, and Andre Parodi, previously the technical director at King . The team also includes veterans who have contributed to popular titles such as Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, and Candy Crush Saga. The studio maintains offices in both Finland and Barcelona .
The studio’s founding was driven by a desire to create “Games Worth Sharing” , moving away from reliance on performance marketing and Apple’s data collection policies .
Misfitz: A New Approach to Mobile Multiplayer
Misfitz, Antihero Studios’ first game, is an extraction shooter similar in style to Brawl Stars. The game has already undergone testing with over 70,000 players , and the studio has partnered with influencers like KairosTime, a prominent figure in Supercell’s creator program, to build a community around the game .
According to CEO Brice Laville Saint-Martin, the game’s mechanics and art style are specifically designed to encourage social interaction among younger players, aiming for organic growth and reach . “In extraction, unlike a deathmatch or Battle Royale, players don’t necessarily demand to compete against each other to win – they can decide to collaborate, fight, or even team up for a short time and betray each other later,” Saint-Martin explained .
Building a Brand Beyond User Acquisition
While acknowledging the importance of user acquisition (UA), Antihero Studios is prioritizing the development of a strong brand identity that resonates with modern gamers . Saint-Martin believes that many studios have overlooked the value of building genuine connections with players, resulting in uninspired companies and games . The studio aims to fill this gap by establishing a brand foundation during the game’s development phase .
Fernanda Romano, former Supercell CMO, is advising Antihero Studios on marketing strategy .
