The surging demand for DDR5 memory, driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, has triggered a wave of automated scalping activity. Online retailers are struggling to maintain supply as bots overwhelm systems, distorting prices and frustrating legitimate consumers.
The Rise of Bot Activity
Recent reports indicate that automated bots are now hitting DDR5 RAM product pages nearly six times more often than genuine shoppers. TechRadar and Silicon Angle both reported that in one campaign, over 10 million scraping requests were blocked, with bots generating more than 50,000 requests per hour across 91 DDR5 listings. This equates to checking stock for a specific RAM kit roughly every 6.5 seconds. Tom’s Hardware also highlighted this intense activity.

The primary driver behind this surge in bot activity is the immense memory requirements of AI. Training large language models and running inference servers demands vast amounts of RAM capacity. As AI continues to evolve, its appetite for memory only grows. This increased demand is pushing the price of DDR5 modules higher, creating an arbitrage opportunity for scalpers. Manufacturers are prioritizing the production of higher-margin, server-grade memory (like HBM) for data centers, which further constricts the supply of consumer-grade DDR5.
Sophisticated Evasion Techniques
These scalping bots aren’t simply brute-forcing product pages. DataDome’s research reveals that attackers are employing advanced techniques to evade detection, including cache-busting parameters and finely tuned scraping speeds. These tactics make traditional security measures, such as IP blocking, less effective.
Beyond Consumer RAM: A Supply Chain Attack
The bot activity extends beyond consumer-focused brands like Corsair, Crucial, and Kingston. Scalpers are also targeting various levels of the supply chain, including DIMM sockets, CAMM2 connectors, and industrial memory modules, indicating a broader attempt to control the DDR5 ecosystem.

Addressing this issue requires advanced security measures capable of identifying anomalous traffic patterns – specifically, impossible consistency and round-the-clock activity. Behavioral analysis is crucial for distinguishing between legitimate users and automated bots.
