Joan Van Ark, born June 16, 1943, is an American actress best known for her portrayal of Valene Ewing, a character who originated on Dallas and became central to the long-running primetime soap opera Knots Landing. Van Ark began her acting career in 1963 and made her Broadway debut in 1966 with Barefoot in the Park. She received a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1971 for her performance in the revival of The School for Wives.

In 1978, Van Ark joined the cast of Dallas, initially appearing in a recurring role as Valene Ewing. This character proved popular enough to warrant a spin-off series, Knots Landing, which premiered in 1979. Van Ark continued to play Valene Ewing throughout the entirety of Knots Landing’s run.

Knots Landing and Critical Acclaim

Knots Landing ran for 13 seasons (1979-1992), with Van Ark as a leading character. Her performance garnered significant recognition, earning her Soap Opera Digest Awards for Best Actress in both 1986 and 1989. She briefly reprised the role for the series’ final two episodes in 1993 and the 1997 miniseries, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac.

According to a recent interview, the storyline involving Valene’s stolen twins and their eventual recovery was a particularly impactful moment for both the character and the show’s ratings, even propelling Knots Landing to the number one spot at the time.

Later Career and Streaming Revival

Following Knots Landing, Van Ark continued to work in television, including a role on The Young and the Restless from 2004 to 2005. She too made a guest appearance in the 2013 revival of Dallas, reprising her role as Valene Ewing.

Recently, Knots Landing has experienced a resurgence in popularity with its complete run becoming available on the streaming platform Plex. This has allowed a new generation of viewers to discover the series and revisit the beloved characters, including Valene Ewing.

Joan Van Ark has been married to John Marshall since 1966 and they have two children, Vanessa Marshall and Joan Martha.
