Nvidia Eyes Space-Based Data Centers, Hiring for ‘Orbital Datacenter System Architect’
Nvidia is exploring the feasibility of establishing data centers in Earth’s orbit, signaling a potential expansion beyond terrestrial AI infrastructure. The company has posted a job opening for an “Orbital Datacenter System Architect” to spearhead the development of products tailored for artificial intelligence applications in space.
Developing AI for Orbit
The newly advertised position, based in Santa Clara, California, focuses on defining and building the architecture for orbital datacenter systems. This includes considering all aspects from the chip level to satellite integration and inter-satellite connectivity . The role also involves collaborating with Nvidia’s silicon, software, and networking teams to create a roadmap for future space-focused products.
Collaboration with Industry Leaders
Nvidia intends to function closely with key customers and system development partners to ensure strategic alignment. This move comes as other companies, including SpaceX and Google, are also actively investigating the potential of space-based data centers.
SpaceX and xAI Partnership
Nvidia’s interest in orbital data centers may be linked to its existing relationship with SpaceX. Last month, SpaceX absorbed Elon Musk’s xAI, which has been procuring hundreds of thousands of enterprise GPUs from Nvidia .
Economic Considerations and Past Experiments
During a recent earnings call, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang acknowledged that the economics of space-based data centers are currently unfavorable but anticipates improvements over time. He revealed that an Nvidia Hopper H100 GPU was already tested in Earth’s orbit last year via a test satellite from Starcloud, a startup aiming to build an 88,000-satellite constellation for AI data centers .
Challenges and Opportunities
While offering potential benefits like harnessing solar energy and enabling high-resolution satellite image processing, space-based data centers face significant hurdles. These include the complexities of cooling GPUs without airflow and protecting hardware from cosmic radiation. The environmental impact and space safety concerns associated with large satellite constellations, such as SpaceX’s proposed network of up to 1 million satellites, are also under scrutiny.

Nvidia may provide further details regarding its orbital data center plans at its annual GTC event in San Jose later this month.
Google’s Approach
Google is also exploring this concept, but describes its efforts as a “research moonshot” involving two prototype satellites scheduled for launch in early 2027.
