Britney Spears Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Britney Spears was arrested in Southern California on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to officials from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol .

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Spears was arrested by the California Highway Patrol shortly after 3 a.m. On Thursday morning. She was booked at a detention center and released around 6 a.m., and was given a May 4 court date .

Spears rose to fame as a teen pop phenomenon in the 1990s and 2000s, with hits such as “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” and “Toxic” .

The singer has publicly struggled with mental health and substance use, and in 2008 was hospitalized. In recent years, a conservatorship that controlled her life and finances faced intense scrutiny, leading to the #FreeBritney movement and a documentary about her legal battle with her father .

The conservatorship was suspended in 2021 .
