Belarus Reports Decline in Abortions and Success with IVF Treatment
Belarus has seen a notable decrease in abortion rates and positive outcomes from in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, according to recent reports from the Ministry of Health. These developments highlight a focus on maternal and child healthcare within the country.
Abortion Rates Decline
Abortion rates in Belarus decreased by nearly 12 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, indicating the success of ongoing preventative efforts. All women seeking abortions received pre-abortion counseling, with increased effectiveness reported according to the Health Minister Alexander Khodzhayev.
IVF Treatment Successes
Assistance to families facing infertility remains a priority in Belarus. The state provides one free cycle of IVF treatment, and in 2025, over 1,300 full treatment cycles were performed. This resulted in 551 clinical pregnancies, demonstrating an effectiveness rate of 42.1 percent.
The success rate is comparable to leading clinics internationally, and 661 children were born from 578 births following the IVF program, showcasing tangible results for families as stated by the Ministry of Health.
Healthcare Leadership Changes
Aleksandr Lukashenko recently appointed Aleksandr Khodzhayev as the new healthcare minister of Belarus as reported by BelTA. Khodzhayev previously headed the National Mental Health Research and Treatment Center and worked in the Main Public Health Directorate of the Healthcare Ministry. This appointment is part of a broader personnel rotation in the lead-up to upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections according to the President’s official website. Dmitry Pinevich, the previous minister, will be transitioning to a different role within the government.
Union State Healthcare Cooperation
Belarus is also focused on developing healthcare cooperation with Russia within the Union State framework. The primary goal is to ensure accessible and high-quality medical care for citizens of both countries as highlighted by Minister Khodzhayev.
