FBI Raid on Fulton County Election Records Fueled by Trump Allies and Debunked Claims

The recent FBI seizure of 2020 election records in Fulton County, Georgia, was not a spontaneous action, but the culmination of a years-long effort led by Trump-aligned members of the Georgia State Election Board, despite numerous reviews confirming the accuracy of the 2020 election results. The raid, which involved heavily armed agents, stemmed from allegations of voting irregularities that have been repeatedly debunked.

A Relentless Pursuit of Fraud Theories

Janice Johnston, a retired obstetrician and current vice chair of the Georgia State Election Board, has been a driving force behind the investigation of Fulton County’s 2020 election results. Prior to her involvement with the election board in 2021, Johnston had no prior experience working in elections . Alongside fellow board member Janelle King, publicly lauded by former President Trump as “pit bulls” during a 2024 rally , Johnston relentlessly pursued theories about Donald Trump’s defeat.

The Subpoena and the FBI’s Involvement

Johnston and the board subpoenaed Fulton County election records, initially requesting them be sent directly to her personal Gmail account. After failing to gain direct access, the board invited the Justice Department’s assistance in 2023, leading to a civil lawsuit and the search warrant secured through a federal criminal probe . During the raid on January 28, 2026, the FBI seized 656 boxes of election documents .

Witnesses and Reactions to the Raid

Johnston was present during the raid and reportedly expressed frustration at being prevented from monitoring the seizure, stating, “But it’s our subpoena!” . She was also overheard urging the FBI to “just take all 700 boxes” of election records . Johnston and King have praised the FBI’s actions, claiming they had no prior knowledge of the search.

Salleigh Grubbs, another Republican board member, described the raid as “great” and expressed satisfaction that “somebody has taken a proactive step to gain access” to the records .

The Role of Kurt Olsen and Other Election Deniers

The FBI’s investigation was initiated following a referral from Kurt Olsen, an attorney who previously attempted to nullify the 2020 election results through legal challenges . Olsen now serves as White House director of election security and integrity. The affidavit supporting the search warrant also cited Joseph Rossi, who has repeatedly alleged fraudulent activity in Fulton County’s 2020 election results and Clay Parikh, an expert witness who previously made similar claims before the state election board .

Legal Challenges and Concerns About Election Integrity

Fulton County has filed a lawsuit seeking the return of the seized materials, and a federal judge has ordered mediation to find a compromise . The Justice Department has argued that evidence of irregularities, even if they didn’t alter the outcome, constitutes probable cause for a crime. However, critics, such as Max Flugrath of Fair Fight Action, argue that the investigation is using debunked claims to undermine the legitimacy of lawful elections.

There are growing concerns that Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, may use her position to promote a narrative of foreign interference in US voting systems .
