Blackpink’s ‘Deadline’ Faces Disconnect Between Album Sales and Global Momentum

K-pop girl group Blackpink’s third Korean EP, Deadline, released on February 27, 2026, has achieved record-breaking initial album sales but is experiencing a decline in global streaming and chart performance compared to their previous work, Born Pink.

Record-Breaking Sales, Shifting Global Trends

Deadline recorded first-week sales of 1,774,500 copies, surpassing the 1.54 million copies sold by Born Pink in its initial release in September 2022. This marks the highest first-week sales figure for any K-pop girl group in history, with total album sales projected to reach approximately 2.66 million copies. Despite the impressive domestic sales, the album’s performance in the global music market presents a contrasting picture.

Streaming and Chart Performance

Data from Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform, indicates a sharp decline of approximately 59% in streaming figures for Deadline between days one and five, compared to the peak performance of Born Pink. On the U.S. Billboard charts, Deadline is projected to debut at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 with 60,000 units, a significant drop from Born Pink’s No. 1 debut with 102,000 units. Entry into the Billboard Hot 100, which weighs music streams heavily, appears increasingly challenging.

Factors Contributing to the Discrepancy

Several factors are believed to be contributing to this divergence. A key issue is the extended hiatus of over three years since Blackpink’s last group album. This led to a surge in “revenge consumption” from core fans eager to support the group’s return through album purchases. However, global listeners, more sensitive to current trends, have not responded with the same enthusiasm.

Strategic missteps by YG Entertainment, Blackpink’s agency, have also been cited. The delayed release of pre-released singles, “Jump” (released July 11, 2025) and “Go” (released February 27, 2026), disrupted the synergy between the new music and the group’s Deadline World Tour, which began in July 2025. The timing meant “Jump,” intended to launch the tour, was released late, and “Go,” meant to conclude it, also faced delays.

the pre-release singles themselves have received mixed reviews, with some overseas fans criticizing them as sounding like “promotional music for a large supermarket” or “B-Class songs.” Growing dissatisfaction within the fandom stems from perceived repetition of concepts and a lack of communication from the agency.

Industry Perspective

An anonymous music industry official acknowledged the positive impact of the 1.77 million initial album sales on YG Entertainment’s revenue but expressed concern over the decline in overseas music index figures, which are crucial for demonstrating long-term intellectual property competitiveness in the global pop market. The official emphasized the urgent need for effective crisis management to address public opinion.

The five-track EP marks the group’s first release since Born Pink in 2022 and their first to be distributed by The Orchard, replacing Interscope Records. The album features the tracks “Jump,” “Go,” “Me and my Champion,” “Fxxxboy,” and “All Albums.”
