UConn Hockey Falls to Providence in Regular Season Finale, Awaits Hockey East Tournament Seeding

PROVIDENCE, RI – The UConn men’s hockey team concluded its regular season with a 3-1 loss to the No. 5 Providence Friars on Saturday at Schneider Arena. Ryan Tattle scored the lone goal for the Huskies.

First Period Battle

The Huskies started strong, applying early pressure, but Providence responded effectively. Midway through the first period, UConn found themselves on the penalty kill after a slashing penalty by Carlin Dezainde. Despite a strong penalty kill, the Friars capitalized shortly after, taking a 1-0 lead when a loose puck in front of the UConn net was converted into a goal.

Tattle Ties the Game in Second Period

The second period saw a back-and-forth battle. UConn earned a power play and Ryan Tattle capitalized, scoring a goal to tie the game at 1-1. Despite creating multiple scoring opportunities, the Huskies were unable to regain the lead before the end of the period.

Providence Secures Victory in Third

Providence quickly regained the lead in the third period, scoring a breakaway goal after a missed attempt to catch a long pass by Viking Gustafsson Nyberg. Despite continued efforts, UConn couldn’t identify the equalizer. With the Huskies pulling their goalie, Tyler Muszelik, late in the game, Providence sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with just two seconds remaining.

Looking Ahead to the Hockey East Tournament

UConn now awaits the results of the Boston College-Northeastern and UMass-UNH games to determine their seeding for the Hockey East Tournament. The Huskies can still finish in second, third, or fourth place.

Tyler Muszelik started in net for UConn, stopping 27 of 29 shots faced.¹

Ryan Tattle has played in all 39 games this season, scoring 18 goals and 14 assists for a total of 32 points. He was named assistant captain mid-season.¹
