Belgium Weather Update: Icy Conditions and Showers Expected
Belgium is bracing for a mix of weather conditions this week, ranging from icy patches to showers and potential storms. The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) has issued a yellow warning for icy conditions, and fluctuating temperatures are expected across the country.
Current Conditions and Forecast for Tuesday
Tuesday will begin with fog in the far northwest of Belgium. Elsewhere, skies will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers. As the day progresses, cloud cover will become more variable, and showers may intensify, potentially turning stormy from the center to the east. Temperatures will range from 10°C in the Hautes-Fagnes to 15°C in Campine, according to the latest IRM forecasts.
Tuesday evening and into the early night, the frequency of showers will decrease, and clearer skies will emerge. Later in the night, cloud cover will increase with the arrival of a rain area from the west.
Wednesday’s Outlook: Rain and Strong Winds
Wednesday will be characterized by very cloudy skies and widespread rain moving in from the west. Isolated showers may still occur to the east, but conditions will become sunnier in the west and central parts of the country. Maximum temperatures will range from 6-7°C in the Hautes-Fagnes to 13°C in the west. Winds will be moderate to occasionally strong, particularly along the coast and on the Ardennes ridges, blowing from the south-southwest with gusts reaching around 55 km/h.
Thursday and Friday: Continued Instability
Thursday will start with sunny conditions in most regions, though some low clouds or fog patches may be present. The sky will gradually become cloudier, but the weather is expected to remain generally dry. Maximum temperatures will be between 7°C in the Hautes-Fagnes and 12°C in Lower Belgium. The south-southwest wind will shift to the southwest and strengthen, becoming moderate to fairly strong with gusts of 50-60 km/h. Coastal areas may experience even stronger winds, peaking at 60-70 km/h.
Friday will bring abundant cloudiness and rain, with potentially significant rainfall amounts in some areas. The weather will become drier from the coast, with increasing clearings. Yet, the disturbance may linger in the Ardennes throughout the evening or overnight, potentially turning to slushy snow. Maximum temperatures will vary from 6 to 11°C. Winds will be moderate to fairly strong from the south, veering to the west-southwest, with gusts reaching 60-70 km/h.
Snow Potential in the Ardennes
As the week progresses, there is a possibility of snow in the higher elevations of the Ardennes region on Friday, as rain transitions to slushy snow due to cooler temperatures.
Icy Conditions Warning
The IRM has issued a yellow warning for icy conditions, effective from Tuesday evening at 10 pm until Wednesday at 11 am, across most of Belgium, excluding the coastal areas. Brussel Times reports that this warning is in place due to the risk of slippery roads and hazardous travel conditions.
Residents are advised to exercise caution even as traveling and to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts.
