Financial Times Expands Access with Free Alphaville Newsletter on Substack

The Financial Times (FT) launched a free weekly newsletter on Substack, authored by the team behind its popular finance blog, FT Alphaville, on November 21, 2025. This marks the FT’s first venture on the online publishing platform, aiming to reach a broader audience, particularly younger investors and finance enthusiasts.

Reaching a New Audience

Sarah Ebner, FT’s director of editorial growth and engagement, highlighted the strategic intent behind the launch: to connect with a demographic already active on Substack. The newsletter is designed to complement the FT’s existing offerings, including free articles, the Editor’s Digest newsletter, personalized event updates and the Alphaville blog on FT.com. This expansion aims to strengthen readership through a value-driven approach.

What is FT Alphaville?

Established in 2006, FT Alphaville has cultivated a reputation for offering a more accessible and often critical perspective on financial markets compared to the FT’s core reporting. The blog is known for its in-depth analysis and commentary on the “geeky mechanics of finance.”

Newsletter Content and Format

Delivered on Friday lunchtimes (UK time), the Substack newsletter isn’t simply a republication of FT articles. Instead, it provides original commentary on weekly market events, drawing on content from the Alphaville blog itself. It features commentary on the week, data visualization, research, sneak previews of upcoming Alphaville events, and striking charts. The newsletter is geared towards “smart, open-minded readers who are curious about markets, economics, and the geeky mechanics of finance, even if they don’t operate in those fields,” according to Alphaville editor Robin Wigglesworth.

Benefits of FT Registration

Beyond the new Substack newsletter, registering with the Financial Times unlocks a range of benefits, including access to free articles, the Editor’s Digest newsletter, personalized event updates based on followed topics, and full access to Alphaville on FT.com. Various subscription tiers are available, offering different levels of access to FT’s global news, and analysis.
