Renee Paquette recently participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, accepting a nomination from wrestler Britt Baker and receiving an icy dousing from her husband, Jon Moxley. The viral social media trend serves as a fundraising and awareness campaign for ALS research.
The Origins and Purpose of the Challenge
Rebel (real name Tanea Brooks) announced back in April that she was diagnosed with ALS. She has been with AEW since 2019. Following the announcement, the promotion launched a line of merchandise dedicated to supporting those affected by the disease, with 100% of the proceeds directed toward ALS research and patient advocacy.
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that targets nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. While there is currently no cure, organizations continue to fund clinical trials and support services to improve the quality of life for patients.
Wrestling Community Participation
Britt Baker initiated the recent wave of participation within the All Elite Wrestling locker room, posting a video on Friday featuring assistance from Rebel and Gail Kim. Baker’s challenge extended to several high-profile names, including Chris Jericho, Adam Cole, Kris Statlander, Orange Cassidy, and Thunder Rosa.
Following her own participation, Paquette nominated a wide array of colleagues to continue the cycle, including:
- Harley Cameron
- RJ City
- Tony Schiavone
- Paul Wight
- Eddie Kingston
- Willow Nightingale
- Christian Cage
- Adam Copeland
Clinical Outlook for ALS Patients
The progression of ALS varies significantly by individual. However, medical advancements and specialized care have allowed approximately 10% of patients to survive for a decade or longer. Fundraising efforts like the Ice Bucket Challenge remain vital for sustaining the research necessary to identify more effective treatments and potential long-term interventions.
