Singapore Man Convicted for Driving with Lover’s Husband on Car Bonnet
A 50-year-old Singaporean man, Chia Hiok Seah, was convicted on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, of a rash act endangering human life after driving away with his lover’s husband on the bonnet of his car. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 29, 2024, at a multi-storey car park in Sengkang.
The Incident
Chia Hiok Seah was in his car with a married woman when her husband, Goh Yong Sern, appeared at the car park at Block 278, Compassvale Bow, at approximately 2:00 AM. According to court documents, Mr. Goh attempted to open the car doors but was unable to do so. He then climbed onto the bonnet of the car in an attempt to prevent Chia and the woman from leaving Channel News Asia.
Chia’s Account
Chia testified in court that he feared for his and the woman’s safety, claiming the husband, Goh Yong Sern, appeared “red in the face” and displayed an anger that suggested he was “trying to kill someone” Malay Mail. He stated he drove off because he believed the husband would attempt to harm them. Chia likewise pleaded guilty to a charge of public nudity, as both he and the woman were nude in the car at the time of the confrontation.
The Court’s Decision
District Judge Ong Luan Tze found Chia’s actions to be an unreasonable response to the situation. Evidence Presented
The prosecution presented video footage taken by Mr. Goh showing him climbing onto the bonnet and Chia driving away with him on the car. Chia had submitted WhatsApp messages between himself and Mr. Goh, but the judge found no evidence to support Chia’s claim of fearing for his safety, noting that the previous interactions were primarily verbal and non-violent Channel News Asia.
Charges and Sentencing
Chia faces a potential jail sentence of up to one year, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both for the rash act endangering human life.
