Xbox Project Helix and PS6: Expected Release Timelines and Next-Gen Features

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, and Sony’s anticipated PlayStation 6 (PS6) are both currently targeting a launch in the autumn of 2027, according to recent industry discussions, and announcements. This potential simultaneous release would mirror the launch windows of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2020.

Project Helix: A Deep Dive into Xbox’s Next Generation

Details surrounding Project Helix were unveiled at GDC 2026, highlighting significant advancements in performance and graphical capabilities. The console will support both Xbox and PC games, aiming for a consistent experience across devices, building on initiatives like the ROG Xbox Ally and the upcoming “Xbox Mode” for Windows 11, scheduled for April 2026. “Xbox Mode” will allow users to seamlessly switch between productivity tasks and gaming on Windows 11 with a full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox experience.

Developed in partnership with AMD, Project Helix is powered by a custom AMD SoC designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). Microsoft claims this will deliver “an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability,” integrating intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline for improved efficiency and visual fidelity. Specifically, the recent console will feature ray regeneration and multi-frame frame generation, alongside machine learning-based upscaling.

PS6: Maintaining Momentum or a Potential Delay?

Initial reports suggested a possible delay to 2028 or beyond, potentially to address RAM supply issues and maintain the performance level of the PlayStation 5.
