Luctus to Perform at Melnā Piektdiena Following Controversial Awards Show Appearance
This Saturday, March 14, Lithuanian black metal band Luctus will perform at Riga’s Melnā Piektdiena club, presenting their album Tamsošviesa and celebrating their 25th anniversary. The concert takes on added significance following a recent, highly publicized incident at a Lithuanian music awards ceremony.
Controversy at the M.A.M.A. Awards
Luctus was crowned Lithuania’s best metal band of 2025 at the M.A.M.A. (Muzikos Asociacijos Metų Apdovanojimai) awards, a Lithuanian equivalent to awards like the “Golden Microphone” or GAMMA. However, their acceptance speech quickly became a focal point of controversy. In a live televised moment, the band sharply criticized the Lithuanian music industry, offering ironic “thanks for nothing” and openly challenging the established system as reported by NRA.lv. The speech, available on YouTube, sparked widespread debate and outrage within the Lithuanian entertainment industry, making Luctus the most discussed metal band in the Baltics.
A Quarter-Century of Dark and Philosophical Sound
Luctus has performed in Latvia previously, including at the “Zobens un Lemess ‘2023” festival. The band released their fifth studio album last year, Tamsošviesa, via the Lithuanian label Inferna Profundus Records. The album explores themes of light and darkness, the fractures of the human psyche, and spiritual transcendence according to NRA.lv. While the band’s previous album, Užribis (2020), resonated strongly with some listeners, Tamsošviesa continues the band’s consistent creation of a dark and philosophical sound world.
Supporting Acts at Melnā Piektdiena
The Melnā Piektdiena concert will also feature performances by three Latvian heavy music groups: Deodium, known for their “blackened death metal”. Eremos-IX, described as aggressive and mythical; and Uguns, a band rapidly gaining popularity with their “evil rock’n’roll”.
Tickets for the concert are available at the club Melnā Piektdiena.
