Sinner Advances to Indian Wells Quarterfinals, Eyes Historic Title

Jannik Sinner, the No. 2 ranked player in the world, continues his quest for the BNP Paribas Open title, defeating Joao Fonseca in a hard-fought match to reach the quarterfinals. The Italian is aiming to become the first player to win all six ATP Masters 1000 hard court tournaments, with a victory in Indian Wells completing the set.

Sinner’s Path to the Quarterfinals

Sinner has yet to drop a set in the tournament, securing wins against Dalibor Svrcina and Denis Shapovalov before his challenging encounter with Fonseca. The match against Fonseca required Sinner to save three set points in the first set, ultimately prevailing in two tie-breaks. With this victory, Sinner has now won 97 Masters 1000 matches, becoming the Italian with the most wins in the history of the tournament BNP Paribas Open.

Quarterfinal Challenge: Facing Learner Tien

Sinner will now face Learner Tien (No. 27) in the quarterfinals. Tien, born in Irvine, California, is playing his first quarterfinal at this level of competition. The two players have met once before, in the final of the ATP 500 in Beijing, where Sinner won 6-2, 6-2 BNP Paribas Open.

Tien’s Upset Run

Tien has had a remarkable run to the quarterfinals, including victories over Adam Walton and a significant upset against No. 8 seed Ben Shelton in three sets. He also overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, saving two match points in the process. At 20 years and 92 days traditional, Tien has already secured 11 victories against players ranked in the Top 20, the youngest to achieve this feat since Michael Chang in 1990 BNP Paribas Open. He is also the youngest player since 1978 to reach at least the quarterfinals in the same season at both the Australian Open and Indian Wells.

Sinner’s Recent Form and Records

This is Sinner’s third tournament of the season, following a semifinal loss at the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic and a quarterfinal exit at the ATP 500 in Doha. He boasts a 33-8 record against left-handed players in the major circuit, with a perfect 3-0 record against them in 2026. His last defeat against a player outside the Top 20 was in Shanghai last autumn and he has won his last 19 matches against such opponents. Sinner also holds a 25-match winning streak against American opponents, dating back to 2023 BNP Paribas Open.

Looking Ahead

Sinner’s performance in Indian Wells will be closely watched as he aims to secure his first title here and complete his collection of Masters 1000 hard court titles. Tien will undoubtedly present a tough challenge, especially with home-court advantage and the momentum from his recent upsets.
