Microsoft CEO Credits Intel and Apple for Early Success of Windows and Office
Microsoft, now a tech giant with a market capitalization exceeding $3.05 trillion as of March 2026, owes a significant portion of its early success to its rivals, Intel and Apple. This acknowledgment came directly from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during a recent appearance at the 2026 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.
The “Wintel” Partnership
Nadella reflected on the company’s history, emphasizing that competition laid the foundation for Microsoft’s current position. He specifically highlighted the crucial relationship with Intel, which birthed the “Wintel” dominance – a combination of Windows operating systems and Intel chips. Without Intel’s processors powering IBM computers, the widespread adoption and success of Windows might never have materialized.
Apple’s Unexpected Role
Perhaps surprisingly, Nadella also credited Apple for contributing to Microsoft’s success. “Without the Mac, I doubt whether (Microsoft) Office would have ever been created,” Nadella stated, as reported by Windows Central. The graphical user interface (GUI) versions of Microsoft’s flagship applications, Excel and Word, actually debuted on Apple’s Macintosh computers before they were available on Windows.
This occurred because Apple’s operating system at the time offered a more visually appealing experience than Windows 1.0, which was still rudimentary in the post-DOS era. Nadella views business as a non-zero-sum game, believing that the success of competitors doesn’t necessarily equate to failure for Microsoft, but rather presents opportunities for mutual growth and value creation.
Shifting Focus: AI, Security, and Quality
While acknowledging this historical legacy, Nadella emphasized that Microsoft is now charting a new course. The company is moving beyond the “software factory” model established by Bill Gates, recognizing that it’s insufficient to meet contemporary challenges. Microsoft’s core focus has shifted to three key pillars: artificial intelligence (AI) transformation, security, and improving product quality.
The Impact of AI
Nadella revealed that AI is fundamentally changing how office workers operate. He noted a significant increase in document creation within SharePoint and OneDrive, driven by the assistance of the Copilot AI assistant. Approximately 4 to 5 percent of the code in the GitHub public repository is now reportedly written entirely by AI agents.
