Daryl Hannah Disputes Portrayal in ‘Love Story’ Series
Ahead of the Disney+ release of Love Story, a series dramatizing the romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. And Carolyn Bessette, actress Daryl Hannah has publicly criticized her depiction in the demonstrate. Hannah voiced her concerns in a scathing editorial for The New York Times, calling the portrayal “irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate” and stating it was “not even a remotely accurate representation of my life.”
The Series and the Controversy
Love Story explores the relationship between Kennedy and Bessette, but likewise features Hannah, whom Kennedy dated before Bessette. The series, which premiered on February 12, depicts Hannah as a needy, insecure, and increasingly desperate figure. Hannah’s portrayal includes scenes described as gauche and even involving cocaine use, claims she vehemently denies.
Hannah stated she has “never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fuelled parties” and refuted other depictions of her behavior, including claims of pressuring Kennedy and desecrating family heirlooms. She noted that the inaccurate portrayal has resulted in hostile messages from viewers who believed the series’ depiction of events.
Support for Hannah
Hannah’s critique has garnered support from fellow actresses and members of the Kennedy family. Jamie Lee Curtis shared Hannah’s New York Times essay on social media, calling it “Critical.” Rosanna Arquette labeled the series’ portrayal as “bulls***t.”
Douglas Kennedy, JFK Jr.’s cousin, also defended Hannah, stating that the show’s depiction was a “misrepresentation” and that his cousin “really cared for her” and “would be very upset” by the portrayal. He described Hannah as “fun, funny and…kind and caring.”
Production Response and Previous Disputes
The series’ creator, Connor Hines, chose not to consult with the Kennedy family during production, believing distance from the subject matter was “more healthy and effective.” Producer Nina Jacobson acknowledged Hannah functions as a narrative “adversary” but insisted the portrayal was done “thoughtfully” and with “compassion.”
This is not the first time Hannah has publicly corrected what she considers false narratives about her relationship with Kennedy. In 2004, she refuted claims that Jackie Kennedy disapproved of her. She also previously disputed a biography’s claim that the relationship ended due to the death of her dog.
Hannah’s Life Beyond Hollywood
Hannah, who rose to fame in the 1980s with roles in Blade Runner and Splash, now lives on a Colorado ranch with singer Neil Young. She has shifted her focus to directing, producing, environmental activism, and animal charities.
