Larry David’s Latest HBO Series Gets June Release Date, Barack Obama to Appear

Larry David is returning to HBO with a new sketch comedy series, Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, set to premiere on June 26, 2026. The series, produced in collaboration with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company, will feature a rotating cast of comedic talent and, notably, an appearance by former President Barack Obama himself.

A Comedic Take on American History

The seven-episode series aims to satirize U.S. History in celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary. As described in the show’s logline, the Obamas initially intended to create a celebratory series honoring America’s history, but David’s involvement brought a unique, and likely irreverent, twist to the project. Each episode will consist of roughly four sketches.

Star-Studded Cast

Obama won’t be the only recognizable face appearing in Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness. The cast includes Bill Hader and Kathryn Hahn as Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes as the Wright brothers, and Jerry Seinfeld as the Clark to David’s Lewis. Curb Your Enthusiasm alums Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, and Vince Vaughn will also make appearances. A recently released clip features Joe Manganiello as a sailor objecting to a character played by David kissing his girlfriend.

Obama’s Collaboration with David

Barack Obama previously teased his collaboration with David, acknowledging the comedian’s famously grumpy and opinionated persona. “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most tricky leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems,” Obama stated. “Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”

‘Curb’ in Costume

Jeff Schaffer, David’s longtime collaborator on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld, is directing the series. Schaffer described the show’s concept as “‘Curb’ in costume,” suggesting a similar improvisational style to David’s previous perform, but with a historical setting and elaborate costumes.

Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness launches June 26 on HBO.
