Russian Forces Claim Control of Huliaipole Amidst Ukrainian Counterattacks

Huliaipole, a small city in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine, has become a focal point in the ongoing conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Recent reports indicate a shifting control dynamic, with Russia claiming complete control of the city as of December 28, 2025, a claim disputed by Ukrainian officials. This comes after a period of intense fighting and a Ukrainian defense that initially managed to regain some tactical positions.

Strategic Importance of Huliaipole

Huliaipole, historically known as the birthplace of Ukrainian anarchist revolutionary Nestor Makhno, held a population of approximately 12,786 in January 2022. Its strategic value lies in its potential to serve as a launching point for Russian offensives towards Zaporizhzhia and Orekhov. According to Ukrainian sources, Russia aimed to capture Huliaipole to establish bridgeheads for a broader offensive in the South Donetsk region.

Recent Developments and Conflicting Reports

In late November 2025, reports emerged of a Russian offensive towards Huliaipole, leading to an uncoordinated retreat by some Ukrainian units. Vladislav Voloshin, a representative of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, acknowledged that a portion of Ukrainian forces withdrew without coordination, allowing Russian troops to advance. However, Ukrainian Defense Forces subsequently managed to regain certain tactical positions in the area.

Despite the Ukrainian counter-offensive efforts, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported full control over Huliaipole by December 28, 2025. This claim was immediately denied by the Ukrainian General Staff.

Current Situation and Challenges

As of late 2025, the population of Huliaipole had dwindled to less than 500 residents. Ukrainian forces are reportedly reinforcing the defensive perimeter around the city, transferring units from other areas. However, Ukrainian counterattacks are hampered by disrupted supply routes, particularly the road between Huliaipole and Pokrovskoye, which is now under Russian fire control.

Ongoing Conflict in the Region

Fighting continues in the broader Zaporizhzhia region, including areas near Dobropolye, Uspenovka, and the Aleksandrovsky sector. Ukrainian assault units and GUR (Main Intelligence Directorate) units remain active in the Stepnogorsk area.

The situation remains dynamic, with both sides attempting to gain an advantage in this critical area of the conflict.
