Ventos: The ‘Fitbit for Flatulence’ Tracking Gut Health with Wearable Tech
A team of researchers at the University of Maryland, led by Assistant Professor Brantley Hall, has developed a wearable device capable of continuously measuring intestinal gas production. Dubbed “Smart Underwear” during its development, the technology is now being commercialized as Ventos by the newly launched company, Ventoscity, and aims to provide unprecedented insight into gut microbial metabolism and gastrointestinal health.
From Lab Experiment to Wearable Technology
The journey to Ventos began with a challenge: accurately measuring hydrogen production by gut microbes. Initial attempts using sensors in a sealed chamber proved unsuccessful. As Hall recounted, a team member inadvertently discovered the device’s potential whereas wearing a prototype: “We removed the sensor from the room. ‘Never mind’ we said, and one of them position the device in his trousers and yelled, the signal was so strong.”
This accidental discovery led to the development of a coin-sized sensor integrated into underwear. Published research in Biosensors and Bioelectronics details the device’s functionality and accuracy.
What Does the Data Demonstrate?
Initial testing with volunteers revealed that healthy adults produce an average of 32 flatuses per day – roughly double previous self-reported estimates. The device also demonstrated 94.7% sensitivity in detecting increased hydrogen levels following the consumption of prebiotic fiber.
The Human Flatus Atlas and Beyond
To gather more comprehensive data, Hall and his team launched the Human Flatus Atlas, a nationwide citizen science study. Within the first week, over 3,000 people signed up to participate, demonstrating significant public interest in understanding and tracking intestinal gas.
Researchers are now focused on determining normal farting patterns and how they vary based on factors like age, diet, and underlying health conditions. Hall emphasizes the current lack of baseline data: “We know what a normal heart rate is, so do a normal cholesterol level… But when you go to the doctor, they don’t know the normal number of farts. Even if you say you fart 50 times a day, they have no reference point to compare it to.”
Commercialization and Future Applications
Ventoscity has licensed the technology from the University of Maryland and is actively seeking a co-founder/CEO to lead its commercialization efforts. The company aims to help individuals identify diets rich in protein and fiber that they can comfortably digest.
The potential benefits extend beyond personal comfort. Researchers believe that understanding gut microbial fermentation could play a role in addressing dietary fiber deficiencies – with 95% of Americans not consuming enough – and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Brantley Hall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics and the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Maryland. His research centers on the intersection of the human gut microbiome and gastrointestinal disease, with a particular focus on developing new methods for measuring gut microbial activities and metabolites.
