Ketapang-Gilimanuk Ferry Crossing Experiences Increased Traffic and Service Adjustments

BANYUWANGI, Indonesia – March 15, 2026 – The Ketapang-Gilimanuk ferry crossing, connecting East Java and Bali, is experiencing a surge in traffic as travelers start their journeys ahead of Nyepi Day. Authorities have increased the number of ferries operating on the route to accommodate the growing demand, whereas also addressing challenges posed by congestion and weather conditions.

Traffic Congestion and Operational Response

As of Sunday, March 15, 2026, significant traffic congestion was reported at Gilimanuk Harbor in Jembrana Regency, Bali, with thousands of people waiting to cross to Ketapang Harbor in Banyuwangi, East Java. The density of vehicles has resulted in sluggish-moving traffic for several hours, exacerbated by hot weather conditions. Reports indicate that some motorbike riders have fainted while waiting in the queues, and minor accidents have occurred.

Marine First Lieutenant (P) Yuli Prasetyo, Commander of the Gilimanuk Naval Post, confirmed that travelers requiring medical assistance have received treatment. He also noted that fluctuating weather conditions, shifting from intense heat to brief showers, are contributing to the challenges faced by travelers. Travelers are advised to prepare physically and mentally for the journey.

Ferry Service Optimization

PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) has responded to the increased traffic by optimizing ferry services on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk route. Currently, 35 ferries are operating continuously, 24 hours a day, to serve the flow of vehicles and passengers traveling from Bali to Java. Kompas.com reports this increase from the usual 28-30 ferries.

The surge in vehicle movements is linked to the upcoming closure of crossing services during Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, scheduled for March 18-20, 2026. ASDP Indonesia Ferry has issued an apology for any inconvenience experienced by service users.
