Carrick’s Future at Manchester United: Rooney Urges INEOS to Prioritize Stability

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has earned a strong endorsement from club legend Wayne Rooney, who believes the INEOS ownership group should appoint Carrick as the permanent head coach. This comes after a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, bolstering United’s Champions League qualification hopes.

Rooney Advocates for Continuity

Following Manchester United’s win against Aston Villa on Sunday, Wayne Rooney publicly urged INEOS to offer Michael Carrick the managerial role on a long-term basis. Rooney emphasized Carrick’s understanding of the club’s culture and his recent success in revitalizing the team since taking over as interim manager in January.

“The club has needed rebuilding a little bit in terms of getting back to the top and back to winning major trophies,” Rooney told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Michael has been at the club for a long time, and he knows what that takes. He is a fine manager, and he is showing that. He is showing that there is no problem managing at this level.”

Champions League Qualification Within Reach

Carrick’s impact has been immediate, with United currently sitting in third place in the Premier League with 54 points from 30 matches. The team is now focused solely on league play and has a strong chance of securing a Champions League spot for next season. Roy Keane has expressed confidence in United’s ability to qualify for the Champions League, citing a lack of distractions as a key factor.

De Zerbi Considered, But Rooney Sees Risk

While INEOS is evaluating other candidates, including former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi, Rooney cautioned against a potentially risky appointment. He believes De Zerbi represents an unnecessary gamble when a proven entity like Carrick is available.

“Why would you change it? Why would you try to discover someone who is a risk like Roberto de Zerbi?” Rooney questioned. “For me, he has to get it.”

Dion Dublin Echoes Rooney’s Sentiment

Former Manchester United and Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin also voiced his support for Carrick, highlighting the positive impact he’s had on the team’s mentality. Dublin noted Carrick’s ability to connect with the players and instill a sense of calm, which he believes is perfectly suited for the club.

Carrick’s Interim Record

In his nine games as interim manager, Carrick has achieved seven wins, one draw, and one loss, demonstrating a significant turnaround in form for Manchester United. This success has further strengthened his case for the permanent position.
