Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Dead at Hulu

Hulu has decided not to move forward with its planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The news was shared by Gellar herself on Saturday, March 14, 2026, via an Instagram post according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Development and Initial Plans

The reboot, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, had been in development since February 2025. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao was attached to direct the pilot episode, with a script penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman as reported by Deadline. The series was intended as a continuation of the original, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong cast as a new Slayer and Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers, also serving as an executive producer.

Gellar’s Announcement and Zhao’s Response

Gellar expressed her disappointment in her Instagram post, stating, “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me.” She also thanked Zhao, acknowledging the opportunity to revisit the character. USA Today reported on Gellar’s message to fans.

Chloé Zhao responded to the cancellation, telling Variety that her priority, along with Gellar’s, was to remain faithful to the original series and its fans. She added, “So things happen for a reason, and we keep an open mind, ready to welcome the mystery. And who knows where this will lead us.”

Reasons for Cancellation and Future Prospects

While the specific reasons for Hulu’s decision remain undisclosed, sources close to the show indicated that the pilot was “not perfect” and that Zhao’s directorial sensibility may not have been the ideal fit for the reboot according to Deadline. Despite the cancellation of the pilot, Hulu reportedly remains interested in the Buffy IP and is considering future iterations of the franchise.

Gellar’s Initial Reluctance and Enthusiasm

Sarah Michelle Gellar was initially hesitant about returning to the role of Buffy, but ultimately agreed after being convinced by Zhao’s “passion” and vision for the show. She felt Zhao’s approach addressed “why now, and why it is necessary” to revisit the character as noted by Deadline.

Gellar concluded her Instagram post with a lighthearted message to fans, saying, “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
