Alcaraz and Fonseca Could Clash in Miami Open Second Round

March 16, 2026

Joao Fonseca and Carlos Alcaraz, who could meet in the Miami second round, played an exhibition in the city in December.

Carlos Alcaraz’s strong start to the 2026 season could continue at the Miami Open presented by Itau. The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings will begin his quest for a second Miami title against #NextGenATP star Joao Fonseca or Fabian Marozsan, with fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti also in his half of the draw.

Alcaraz and Fonseca previously played an exhibition match at a baseball stadium in Miami in December 2025 (YouTube). Three months later, they could meet again, this time in their first Lexus ATP Head2Head Series clash. Fonseca will first demand to defeat Marozsan, who defeated him in Rome last year (Tennisworldusa.org). Fonseca recently pushed Jannik Sinner to two tie-breaks in the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open (Facebook).

Last year in Miami, Fonseca reached the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time, defeating Learner Tien and Ugo Humbert before falling to Alex de Minaur (ESPN).

Second seed Jannik Sinner will begin his bid to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ against Damir Dzumhur or a qualifier/lucky loser. The Italian is in the same quarter as eighth seed Ben Shelton.

Seventh seed Taylor Fritz is also in Alcaraz’s quarter and could face the Spaniard in the last eight. The top-ranked American opens against Denis Shapovalov or Botic van de Zandschulp.

Musetti, who could be Alcaraz’s semi-final opponent, will aim to bounce back from his second-round defeat in Indian Wells when he faces a qualifier or a lucky loser in his opening match in Miami.
