Jakarta to Implement Car-Free Night and Free Public Transportation for Eid al-Fitr Celebrations
Jakarta is preparing for Eid al-Fitr with a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the celebration for residents, including a car-free night on Takbiran evening and free public transportation for two days. These measures are designed to facilitate mobility, ensure safety, and boost the local economy during the holiday period.
Car-Free Night on Takbiran Evening
To mark Takbiran, the eve of Eid al-Fitr, the Jakarta Provincial Government will implement a car-free night on Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. The restrictions will begin at 10:00 PM WIB and remain in effect until the conclusion of the official religious processions. This initiative aims to create a pedestrian-friendly environment for residents to celebrate without the disruption of traffic.
Despite the vehicle restrictions, TransJakarta buses will continue to operate normally to ensure accessibility throughout the city. Authorities are encouraging residents to utilize public transportation to avoid traffic congestion in surrounding areas.
Free Public Transportation for Eid al-Fitr
All public transportation services managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government will be free for two days, coinciding with the day of Eid al-Fitr and the following day. This includes the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), LRT (Light Rail Transit), TransJakarta, TransJabodetabek, JakLingko, and Mikrotrans as reported by Tempo.co.
Passengers are still required to tap their electronic money cards or e-money with a fare of Rp1 as a mechanism for recording their journey in the public transportation system.
Cultural Events and Economic Boost
In addition to the transportation initiatives, Jakarta will host a range of cultural events to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
- Bedug Festival: Showcasing traditional drumming performances, the Bedug Festival highlights a significant cultural symbol of Islamic celebration in Indonesia.
- Torch Relay (Pawai Obor): Residents and youth groups will participate in a traditional parade with hand-held torches, symbolizing joy and gratitude after Ramadan.
Shopping centers along the car-free night route will offer special Ramadan discounts and promotions to stimulate public spending and enhance the festive atmosphere. Indonesia Expat reports that the Jakarta Provincial Government plans to organize a series of events, including a Hijab Fashion Show.
Security Measures in Place
The Jakarta Provincial Government is coordinating with the police and the military to ensure security during the Eid al-Fitr eve celebrations and throughout the holiday period. Antara News reported on March 7, 2026, that Governor Pramono Anung emphasized the importance of maintaining security across the capital.
“Mudik to Jakarta” Program
The local government has introduced the concept of “Mudik to Jakarta,” aimed at people who are not returning to their hometowns, offering them opportunities to experience the Eid atmosphere in the capital city, including discounts of up to 70 percent at shopping centers and in the hospitality sector.
Free access to tourist destinations such as Ancol, Ragunan, and Monas will similarly be provided for Kartu Jakarta Pintar (KJP) or ‘Jakarta Smart Card’ holders.
