Hugoeast Showcases Film Slate at FilMart, Led by Award-Winning ‘Shanghai Wonton’

Beijing-based sales company Hugoeast has unveiled its lineup at the Hong Kong FilMart, with the feature film “Shanghai Wonton” taking center stage. The film, produced by Shanghai Artown Film and directed by Wu Tiange, has already garnered critical acclaim and box office success in China.

“Shanghai Wonton”: A Story of Family and Connection

“Shanghai Wonton” centers on Lao Wang, a retired engineer in Shanghai, and his weekly tradition of sharing homemade wontons with his son. Driven by a desire to see his son settled, Lao Wang ventures into the city’s marriage market, embarking on an unexpected and emotional journey.1

The film, originally titled “Vegetable and Meat Wonton,” is adapted from a novel by Jin Ying and stars Zhou Yemang, Pan Hong, Mao Shanyu, Chen Guoqing, and Xu Xiang, with Wang Lin making a special appearance. 2 It was released in China on December 27, 2025. 2

“Shanghai Wonton” received the Shanghai Film of the Year prize at the 32nd Shanghai Film Critics Awards in January 2026. 2 As of January 17, 2026, the film had grossed RMB27.742 million (approximately $4.35 million) at the Chinese box office. 2

“Slow Road to Hainan” Offers a Poetic Documentary Perspective

Alongside “Shanghai Wonton,” Hugoeast is as well presenting the documentary feature “Slow Road to Hainan,” directed by Fu Jin and He Lei. 1

Filmed along Hainan’s Coastal Highway, the documentary explores the changing lives and identities of fishing villages as environmental awareness grows. Producers describe the film as a “poetic portrait” of communities balancing tradition, nature, and sustainability. 1 “Slow Road to Hainan” is currently in production and is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2026. 1

Hugoeast: A Purveyor of Arthouse and Documentary Films

Founded in 2016, Hugoeast has established itself as a distributor of arthouse films and documentaries, particularly those by Chinese directors, with a specific focus on female-themed narratives. 1 The company has also distributed over 200 foreign-language arthouse films within Mainland China. 1
