‘Lilo & Stitch 2’ Set for 2028 Release, Following Billion-Dollar Success of Live-Action Remake
Disney has officially slated a theatrical release date for Lilo & Stitch 2, continuing the momentum from the surprisingly successful live-action remake released in 2025. The sequel is set to arrive in theaters on May 26, 2028, according to announcements made during Disney’s shareholders meeting on March 18, 2026.
Live-Action Success Drives Sequel
The 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, exceeded expectations, grossing over $1 billion worldwide [Collider]. The film’s financial performance—$423.7 million domestically and $614.2 million internationally—prompted Disney to greenlight a sequel shortly after its release [MovieWeb].
Release Date and Competition
Lilo & Stitch 2 will debut on Memorial Day weekend, mirroring the release strategy of the first live-action film [MovieWeb]. Currently, no other major film releases are scheduled for that weekend, though this is expected to change as the date approaches [Deadline]. Notably, The Mummy 4, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, is slated for release the week prior, on May 19, 2028 [Collider].
Creative Team and Plot Details
Animation savant Chris Sanders, who was instrumental in the original animated film, will return for the sequel, reprising his role as Stitch and contributing to the screenplay [Collider]. However, plot details remain under wraps. Disney has indicated they will not directly adapt the storylines from the 2005 direct-to-video sequel, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch [MovieWeb].
Disney’s Novel Leadership
The announcement of Lilo & Stitch 2’s release date was made by Disney’s new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, on his first official day in the role, March 18, 2026 [MovieWeb]. D’Amaro also revealed the release date for Incredibles 3, set for June 16, 2028 [Deadline].
Lilo & Stitch is currently available to stream on Disney+.
