Romania Weather Update: Sudden Temperature Shift and Wind Warnings

Romania is bracing for a significant weather change, with temperatures expected to drop sharply starting Thursday, March 18, 2026. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued warnings for strong winds in several counties, including Bucharest.

Temperature Drop and Precipitation

After experiencing warmer-than-usual temperatures, with highs reaching 14-15°C in Bucharest on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, a cold air mass will move in. Elena Mateescu, director of ANM, explained that temperatures will fall to 7-9°C in the center, east, and southeast of the country by Thursday. Western and southwestern regions will see temperatures remain between 10 and 13°C.

Precipitation is expected to accompany the cooling trend, with light rain in lower areas and the possibility of sleet and snow in the high mountains. While the cooler weather will be brief, temperatures are predicted to rise again from Monday, reaching 10-17°C by Tuesday – values significantly above the normal for late March.

Wind Warnings

A meteorological information is in effect for strong winds, with gusts of 40-45 km/h in lower areas and 60-80 km/h in the high mountains. A yellow code warning for strong winds, with gusts between 50 and 60 km/h, has been issued for Caraș-Severin, Mehedinți, Dolj and Olt counties. ANM

Weather Forecast for Bucharest

Bucharest will experience a similar temperature shift. Highs will decrease from 14-15°C on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, to 12-14°C on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, and further to approximately 9-10°C on Thursday, March 19, 2026. A weather warning for wind intensifications is in effect for Bucharest between March 17, 10 a.m. And March 19, 8 p.m.

Extended Forecast (March 17 – April 12, 2026)

The ANM’s updated forecast indicates an increased probability of rain around March 18 and again after March 25. ANM
