iOS 27: iPhone Fold, AI Siri & WWDC 2026 Preview
As anticipation builds for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2026, the tech community is buzzing about the upcoming iOS 27, set to roll out alongside the first foldable iPhone, potentially named the iPhone Fold. This latest operating system update promises a range of innovative features, especially with a focus on enhancing user experiences through advanced AI capabilities and new interface designs tailored for foldable devices.
Foldable iPhone Features
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a compact 5.5-inch display when folded and expand to a 7.8-inch display when opened like a book. This transition necessitates significant changes to iOS, particularly in developing new interfaces that enhance user interactions on larger screens. The iPhone Fold will combine characteristics of both iPhones and iPads, operating on iOS rather than iPadOS and excluding support for iPad apps. When unfolded, users can expect an iPad-like layout that supports multitasking, allowing two apps to be displayed side by side. Apple plans to provide developers with tools to adapt their existing apps to this new layout seamlessly. The design is speculated to have a unique 4:3 aspect ratio, differing from other foldable devices on the market, ensuring a wider display experience.
Revamped Siri: A Smarter Assistant
Initially expected to debut within iOS 26.4, a fully revamped version of Siri is now anticipated as part of iOS 27. The integration of Apple Intelligence is set to transform how users interact with Siri, making the virtual assistant more intuitive and responsive to individual needs. Apple described three specific ways Siri will improve with Apple Intelligence integration, including taking into account personal context, the ability to recognize screen content and understand what the user is talking about, and the ability to multitask within and between apps. 9to5Mac
With personal context recognition, Siri will be able to track emails, messages, files, photos and other content, learning more and more about you to help you complete tasks and keep track of what’s been sent to you. With ‘Onscreen Awareness’, Siri will see what’s currently on your screen and perform actions related to what you’re currently looking at. If someone texts you an address, you can inquire Siri to add it to their contact card. Or if you’re looking at a photo and want to send it to someone, you can ask Siri to do it for you.
With deeper integration with apps, Siri will be able to do more within and across apps, including actions and tasks that aren’t currently possible with the personal assistant. Apple is reportedly planning to turn Siri into a full-fledged chatbot that users will be able to interact with similar to Claude or ChatGPT. Macworld
iOS 27: Performance Over Features
Apple intends to treat iOS 27 similarly to Mac OS X Snow Leopard (version 10.6). After the major overhaul of Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), Apple spent the next year removing cruft, fixing bugs, streamlining, optimizing, and improving performance. There will be some new features, but much time and effort is being spent on cleaning up the code and improving performance. Macworld
Artificial Intelligence Everywhere
AI should finally play a bigger role in Apple devices. For example, it should be integrated into the calendar, but the most attention would be the integration of AI into the Health application. Some of the features that Apple intended to introduce could still appear in iOS 27, although it is not yet clear what exactly those should be.
iOS 27 Cleanup and Improvements
Apple is preparing a major cleanup in iOS 27, focusing on three key areas. Apple’s primary focus is on cleaning up the iOS code and removing anything outdated, which may imply updating apps to improve performance and reworking some existing features to make them more efficient. These code updates could result in a more responsive and faster version of iOS. Apple is also trying to increase efficiency, which could translate into a tangible increase in battery life.
WWDC 2026 and Beyond
Apple will likely confirm the dates for WWDC 2026 next week. 9to5Mac The event, expected in June, will unveil iOS 27 and more. The release of iOS 27 is anticipated in September of 2026.
