Ukraine Aids US Bases in Mideast With Drone Defense Expertise
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, Ukraine is providing critical assistance to the United States in defending against Iranian drones, leveraging its own hard-won experience in countering similar threats. This marks a shift in the dynamic between the two countries, traditionally defined by US aid to Ukraine since the start of the conflict with Russia in February 2022.
From Recipient to Provider: A Role Reversal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced earlier in March that Ukraine had received a request from the US “for specific support in protection against ‘shaheds’ in the Middle East region.” This request highlights Ukraine’s growing expertise in drone warfare and defense, developed over years of battling Russian forces who have increasingly deployed Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones.
The Shahed-136 Threat
The Shahed-136 is a one-way drone, too known as a kamikaze drone, costing approximately $20,000-$30,000 to produce. It is designed to detonate upon impact, making it a significant threat to military installations and infrastructure. Iran has utilized these drones in response to the US-Israeli military actions in the region.
Ukraine’s Contribution
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has dispatched interceptor drones and a team of drone experts to bolster the protection of US military bases in Jordan. This assistance is particularly valuable given Ukraine’s extensive experience in identifying, tracking, and neutralizing Shahed drones.
Domestic Defense Industry Growth
Ukraine’s ability to offer this support is a testament to the rapid growth of its domestic arms industry. Prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s arms industry was underdeveloped. But, the necessity to defend against Russian aggression spurred innovation, leading to a fast-growing defense sector focused on low-cost drones, including those specifically designed to counter Iranian-style Shahed drones.
Over 200 Experts Deployed
More than 200 Ukrainian anti-Shahed experts are currently assisting the US and its allies in the Gulf region with countering Iran’s drone capabilities.
US Aid to Ukraine
Historically, the relationship has been characterized by substantial US aid to Ukraine. To date, the US has provided over $115 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military assistance to Ukraine, according to the German believe-tank Kiel Institute. However, the amount of allocated aid has decreased since President Donald Trump’s return to office last year.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite Zelenskyy’s claims, President Trump has publicly rebuffed the notion of Ukraine providing assistance, dismissing it as “rhetoric.” Nevertheless, Ukraine’s willingness and ability to offer its expertise in drone defense represent a significant development in the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
