Hygiene Education Reaches Over 1,500 Students in Lai Chau Province
A recent initiative in Lai Chau Province, Vietnam, has brought vital hygiene education to over 1,500 primary school students, aiming to cultivate healthy habits and create safer learning environments. The program, part of the broader “School Safety and Hygiene” Project, Phase 2 (2025-2026), underscores the importance of personal hygiene in fostering well-being and academic success.
Program Implementation and Participating Schools
From March 16-20, 2026, the Lai Chau Provincial Women’s Union coordinated a series of events focused on changing personal hygiene behaviors in schools. The initiative was implemented across four primary schools: Nam Hang Primary School (including its central school and Nam Cay village branch), Nam Manh Primary School (Nam Hang commune), Nam Cha Primary School (Muong Mo commune), and Pu Dao Primary School (Le Loi commune). Vietnam.vn reports that the program attracted participation from a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the Lai Chau Provincial Women’s Union, Samaritan’s Purse, local Women’s Unions, cultural officials, teachers, and students.
Engaging Activities and Knowledge Transfer
The program employed a variety of engaging activities to educate students on personal hygiene practices. These included performing arts, skits, interactive games, knowledge quizzes, and flashmob dances. Through these methods, students gained essential knowledge and skills related to personal hygiene and the importance of maintaining a clean school environment. Students were incentivized to participate through the distribution of gifts during the events.
Building a Sustainable Culture of Hygiene
The initiative emphasizes experiential learning, interaction, and real-life application to help students internalize good hygiene habits. The lively and cheerful atmosphere fostered interaction and holistic development, both physically and mentally. By focusing on behavior change from a young age, the program aims to establish a safe, healthy, and sustainable school environment within the Lai Chau Province.
Broader School Safety Initiatives in Vietnam
This program aligns with broader efforts to enhance school safety in Vietnam. The Viet Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) was recognized as an ASEAN School Safety Champion in 2019 for its work promoting child safety in schools. These interventions involve collaboration with provincial Departments of Education and Training, school governance, and community stakeholders to foster a culture of risk reduction and disaster safety. The Ministry of Education and Training likewise began developing guidelines for school safety implementation and assessment in December 2016.
The Importance of Health and Hygiene in Schools
Promoting health and hygiene in schools is crucial for preventing illness and improving educational outcomes. Key practices include proper handwashing, social distancing, maintaining clean environments, and vaccinations. The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for health-promoting schools that provide a healthy environment, health education, health services, and community outreach programs.
