Bulgaria Weather in Late March & Early April: Cyclonic Conditions and Potential Snow
Bulgaria is experiencing a dynamic weather pattern in late March and early April, with fluctuating temperatures, rainfall, and the potential for snowfall, even in lower elevations. A cyclonic system is expected to bring intense rain and thunderstorms, followed by a drop in temperatures and a return to wintry conditions.
Current Weather Overview (Late March)
The final week of March began with significant cloud cover across much of the country. Rainfall was observed in Eastern Bulgaria on Monday, shifting to the southern half of the country on Tuesday. The snow line remained in the middle and high mountain regions. Temperatures have remained relatively stable, fluctuating around and above zero in the mornings and reaching 8 to 16 degrees Celsius in the afternoons.
Mid-Week Calm Before the Storm
A brief period of calmer weather is anticipated mid-week, with more frequent cloud breaks and scattered local rain showers primarily in the mountains. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise to between 13 and 18 degrees Celsius.
Approaching Cyclonic System (Late March/Early April)
A significant weather change is on the horizon as a cyclone approaches Bulgaria. A front with intense rain and thunderstorms is forecast to move from west to east on Friday, with a risk of hail in the eastern half of the country. The rapid influx of cold air will cause the rain to transition to snow in Western and, in some areas, Central Bulgaria. This could lead to travel disruptions on mountain passes.
Weekend Conditions & Time Change
Precipitation will continue over the weekend, coinciding with the switch to summer time. The precipitation will be of a short-term and localized nature, consisting of both rain and snow in the mountains and foothills. Temperatures will drop, potentially falling below zero in the valleys of Western Bulgaria during the early morning hours due to the time change, reaching -3 to -4 degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures will range from 8 to 13 degrees Celsius.
Early April Forecast
The dynamic weather situation is expected to persist in the first few days of April (April 2-4), with continued intense precipitation in places. As temperatures fall, there is a risk of renewed snowfall. While drastically low temperatures are not currently forecast, nighttime temperatures in the valleys of Western and Central Bulgaria could drop to -4 to -5 degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures will be between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.
