The Theory of Evolution Through Natural Selection

The foundational theory explaining the development of life on Earth is evolution through natural selection, first articulated by Charles Darwin in his seminal work, “On the Origin of Species” in 1859.2 Darwin proposed that organisms evolve over generations through the inheritance of traits, both physical and behavioral. The development of evolutionary theory has prompted diverse responses from religious communities. Some adherents view the theory as conflicting with religious teachings that posit a divine creation of Earth and all living creatures. For example, some Christians interpret the Bible as describing a creation occurring over six days, rather than over billions of years. However, other Christians believe the “days” of creation represent extended periods of time.

Some Christians reconcile evolution with their faith by believing that God oversees the natural process of evolution, having created both nature and the mechanisms that drive it. They view all changes as part of God’s plan and design.2

Within Hinduism, views on evolution vary. Some adherents disagree with the theory, believing that the god Vishnu played a direct role in evolution rather than allowing it to unfold naturally, which contradicts traditional Hindu creation stories. However, many Hindus accept evolution, viewing Brahman as the creator of life and Vishnu as its preserver, with evolution serving as a means of preservation.

In Islam, some Muslims struggle with the idea that humans are subject to the same natural selection processes as other species, given the Quran’s emphasis on humanity’s special and supervisory role in creation. However, others view evolution as Allah’s method of creating life, believing that God created an environment conducive to evolution and oversees the natural processes by which species evolve.2
