Pop Star Chappell Roan Faces Backlash After Alleged Incident with Soccer Star Jorginho’s Daughter
Pop singer Chappell Roan is at the center of a controversy after former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho accused her security team of aggressively confronting his 11-year-old daughter. The incident reportedly occurred at a hotel in São Paulo, Brazil, over the weekend, while Roan was headlining the Lollapalooza music festival.
Jorginho’s Account of the Incident
Jorginho detailed the situation in an Instagram post, stating that his daughter, a fan of Roan, had simply smiled at the singer while walking past her table at breakfast. According to Jorginho, a security guard then approached their table and spoke to his wife and daughter in an “extremely aggressive manner,” accusing the daughter of “disrespect” or “harassment.” He claimed the guard even threatened to file a complaint with the hotel, leaving his daughter “extremely shaken and in tears.”
“Without your fans, you would be nothing,” Jorginho wrote in his post, expressing his frustration with the alleged treatment of his family. BBC News and The Hollywood Reporter both reported on the incident.
Chappell Roan’s Response
Roan responded to the allegations in a video posted online, clarifying that the security guard was “not my personal security.” She stated she hadn’t even noticed the interaction, explaining, “I didn’t even see a woman and a child… no one came up to me, no one bothered me… I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel.”
Roan apologized to the mother and child if they felt uncomfortable, emphasizing that she does not condone aggressive behavior towards fans. She explained that she did not ask the security guard to approach the family and believes the guard may have acted on their own assumption. Roan also stated, “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children – that is crazy.”
Aftermath and Public Reaction
Despite Roan’s apology, the incident sparked significant backlash. Eduardo Cavaliere, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, banned Roan from performing at the city’s Todo Mundo festival. The BBC reported that Cavaliere stated, “As long as I’m in charge of our city – this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio!” He also extended an invitation to Jorginho’s daughter to be a guest of honor at the festival in May.
