Czech Football Rocked by Corruption and Match-Fixing Scandal Ahead of World Cup Playoff

Just before the Czech Republic national football team’s crucial World Cup play-off against Republic of Ireland, a major corruption and match-fixing scandal has erupted, sending shockwaves through Czech football. The investigation, involving police intervention, affects all levels of the game, from the top flight to youth leagues, and extends internationally.

According to information from Aktuálně.cz, the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR) initiated the investigation and is cooperating with police. FAČR chairman David Trunda announced at a press conference that the FAČR Ethics Commission has launched 47 disciplinary proceedings as of March 24, 2026.

Key Individuals and Clubs Involved

The investigation implicates several individuals and clubs, including:

  • Karviná: A first league team.
  • Samuel Šigut and Matěj Hýbl: Footballers from Karviná.
  • Jan Wolf: The mayor of the city owning Karviná.
  • SFC Opava: A second-league team.
  • Jan Všetečka, Jan Petřík, and Simon Vejtas: Referees who officiated matches in the top flight this season.
  • Miroslav Zelinka: A well-known referee with 18 seasons of league experience.
  • Pavel Býma: A former first league referee previously involved in a 2012 match-fixing case.

Trunda emphasized the FAČR’s commitment to transparency and eradicating the “betting mafia” from Czech football, stating that UEFA has been informed and appreciates the association’s approach.

International Scope and Organized Crime

The investigation extends beyond Czech borders, with tracks leading primarily to Moravia. A source close to the investigation, as reported by Aktuálně.cz, indicated that players, referees, and officials are involved in an international operation centered around match-fixing, and bribery.

The High State Prosecutor’s Office (VSZ) in Olomouc confirmed the police raid concerns suspicions of corruption and fraudulent behavior related to sports match betting as of March 24, 2026. Several dozen people have been detained, and searches have been conducted at various locations.

Rise of Betting Groups

The Czech Republic has seen a growing influence of betting groups, including a Balkan group known as “Gypsy” and a rising Ukrainian gang. These groups often target lower-competition clubs, offering financial support and infiltrating clubs without appearing in the official organizational structure.

This problem extends beyond football, affecting all sports in the Czech Republic. However, football authorities have taken steps to address the issue, initiating a major purge.

The Czech Republic national football team, currently ranked 43rd by FIFA as of January 19, 2026, is preparing for its World Cup play-off semi-final against the Republic of Ireland on March 26th. Pavel Šulc, despite a recent hamstring injury, has been included in the squad as of March 17, 2026, alongside Patrik Schick.
