Radio Host Ruud de Wild Briefly Steps Back Amidst Controversy Over Documentary Interview
Dutch radio personality Ruud de Wild temporarily left his reveal on NPO Radio 2 following a surge of threats and abusive messages sparked by a recent interview with the director of the documentary Meer dan Babi Pangang (More Than Hot Pot). The controversy centers on accusations of racism and insensitive questioning during the interview.
Documentary and Interview Spark Debate
Meer dan Babi Pangang explores the history and experiences of Chinese-Indonesian people in the Netherlands. Director Julie Ng appeared on Ruud de Wild’s radio program, “Wild in de Middag,” to discuss the film. However, Ng and her producers allege the interview focused disproportionately on stereotypes surrounding Chinese cuisine, which they characterized as racist and irresponsible journalism.
According to RTL Boulevard, the filmmakers have requested public apologies from de Wild and co-host Lauren Verster, as well as a viewing of the documentary and a discussion about “institutional bias” towards Asians.
NPO and PowNed Responses
The filmmakers initially filed a complaint with NPO, the Dutch public broadcasting organization, but were directed to PowNed, the broadcasting organization where de Wild and Verster function. PowNed conducted an internal investigation and determined that de Wild and Verster had not seen the documentary prior to the interview, deeming the invitation of Ng inappropriate.
PowNed attempted to resolve the issue with a phone call between de Wild and Ng, but the filmmakers claim no apology was offered.
Escalation and De Wild’s Departure
The filmmakers revisited their demands for an apology, which, according to Headliner.nl, reignited the controversy and led to an increase in threats directed at de Wild. De Wild announced he would take a week-long break from his show.
Dominique Weesie, a representative for PowNed, stated that although death threats are unfortunately common for media personalities in the Netherlands in 2026, de Wild’s past experiences, particularly relating to the threats faced by Pim Fortuyn, made the situation particularly difficult for him.
Reactions from Dutch Media Personalities
Several Dutch media personalities have weighed in on the situation. Valentijn Driessen described de Wild’s departure as “drama queen behavior,” while Johan Derksen criticized the continued focus on the interview, calling it “ridiculous” and suggesting de Wild should directly address the criticism instead of retreating. Wilfred Genee noted that de Wild had offered to watch the documentary with Ng but received no response.
Evert Santegoeds and Rob Goossens, commentators on Shownieuws and RTL Boulevard respectively, acknowledged that threats are an unfortunate reality for public figures, but emphasized that giving attention to the perpetrators only encourages further abuse.
De Wild’s Statement
De Wild has stated he is not a racist, and expressed frustration with the intensity of the backlash.
