Russian Strikes Target Western Ukraine, Killing Two in Ivano-Frankivsk

Russia launched a series of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, resulting in casualties and damage in several regions. The city of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine was particularly hard hit, with at least two people confirmed dead and four injured, including a six-year-old child, according to regional officials. The attacks are part of a larger pattern of strikes targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas.

Ivano-Frankivsk Under Attack

The strikes on Ivano-Frankivsk began in the central part of the city, damaging windows in several buildings, including a maternity hospital. Ruslan Martsinkiv, the Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, stated that even as the maternity hospital sustained damage, no one was injured inside as patients and staff were in shelters. Authorities reported an attempt to target an administrative building. However, Svitlana Onyshchuk, head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Military Administration, confirmed that two people were killed in the attack.

According to Onyshchuk, approximately ten residential buildings were also damaged in the strikes. Emergency responders are working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected. Residents have been urged to contact the administrative service center for help with window repairs.

Wider Ukrainian Impact

The attacks were not limited to Ivano-Frankivsk. Lviv, Vinnytsia, and Ternopil also experienced strikes earlier in the day. In Lviv, at least 22 people were wounded, and a church building within the Bernadine Monastery Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was hit, causing a fire. The extent of the damage to the historical site is still being evaluated.

In Vinnytsia, one person was killed and eleven others were injured.

Escalation of Drone Warfare

Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat described the attacks as one of the largest daytime assaults in recent months, with drones directed towards central and western Ukraine. The Ukrainian air force reported neutralizing at least 541 drones and identified at least 15 hits.

Russian Attacks in Kursk Region

Simultaneously, Ukraine launched drone attacks into Russian territory. In the Kursk region of Russia, a 55-year-old man was killed, and 13 others were injured, according to Acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein.

Ongoing Conflict

These attacks underscore the continuing intensity of the Russo-Ukrainian war, which began in February 2022. The conflict has involved widespread destruction and displacement, with both sides engaging in aerial attacks and ground combat. The strikes on Ivano-Frankivsk and other Ukrainian cities highlight the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure and the ongoing threat to the population.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
