However, this automation often falters when trying to turn the lights off again – if you’re sitting still, the motion sensor can’t detect you, leaving you in the dark.
The concept of presence-based lighting remains valuable. True smart home automation should be seamless: lights should react to your needs, turning on when required and off when not. Two Sensors Are Better Than One
Setting up presence-based lighting with a motion sensor can be challenging, as motion sensors only detect movement, not continuous presence. However, the right hardware simplifies the process.
Presence sensors detect not only entry but also continued occupancy. mmWave sensors use high-frequency radar to detect even subtle movements, like breathing, allowing them to track occupancy accurately.
While effective, presence sensors can be slower to react than traditional PIR motion sensors. The ideal solution is to combine both types. A PIR motion sensor provides quick initial activation upon entry, while the presence sensor maintains illumination as long as you remain in the room.

Don’t Leave Yourself in the Dark

With the right sensors, automating lights based on presence is straightforward. When the PIR sensor detects motion, the automation turns the light on. When the presence sensor detects no occupancy, the light turns off.
However, this automation isn’t foolproof. MmWave sensors can occasionally lose track of your presence. To mitigate this, incorporate a short cooldown period into your automation. Instead of immediate shutdown upon detecting no presence, set a delay – for example, 30 seconds. This allows the lights to remain on if the sensor briefly loses track, turning off only after a sustained period of absence.
True Automation Should Work By Itself
When properly configured, presence-based lighting feels genuinely magical. Further refinements, such as adjusting lights based on ambient light levels or implementing smooth transitions, can enhance the experience. The result is a lighting system that intuitively responds to your needs, providing illumination when and where you need it.
