World Snooker Championship to Remain at Crucible Theatre Until 2045
The World Snooker Championship will continue to be held at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, until at least 2045, with an option to extend the agreement to 2050. This landmark deal, reached between World Snooker Tour (WST) and Sheffield City Council, secures the future of the prestigious tournament at its historic home.
A Long-Standing Tradition
The Crucible has hosted the World Championship since 1977, becoming synonymous with the tournament and a key fixture in the UK sporting calendar. The current agreement between WST and Sheffield City Council was set to expire in 2027, but this new arrangement extends the partnership for an additional 18 years, with a potential five-year extension.
Crucible Theatre Redevelopment Plans
Alongside the extension of the championship’s stay, plans are underway to redevelop the Crucible Theatre. The proposed £45 million (€52m/$60.2m) redevelopment aims to enhance spectator facilities and potentially increase the venue’s seated capacity by up to 500 seats, creating an “in the round” configuration. The Stadium Business reports that the current seated capacity is 980.
The tournament will continue in its current format until 2028. During the redevelopment period, expected to start after the 2028 event, the championship will be temporarily hosted at an alternative venue before returning to a revamped Crucible. The funding for the redevelopment will come from a combination of national and local government contributions (£35m) and private sector investment (£10m). The Yorkshireman
