AI and Health Information: A Growing Trend with Privacy Concerns
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing how Americans access and understand health information. A new KFF Tracking Poll reveals that roughly one-third of adults are now turning to AI chatbots for health advice, a trend particularly pronounced among younger demographics and those facing barriers to traditional healthcare. Although offering convenience and immediate access, this growing reliance on AI for health raises crucial questions about data privacy, accuracy, and the evolving role of healthcare professionals.
One-Third of Adults Now Using AI for Health Information
According to the KFF poll, 32% of adults are utilizing AI tools for health-related information and guidance. Specifically, 29% have sought advice on physical health, while 16% have turned to AI for mental health support in the past year. This usage is comparable to seeking health information on social media, but remains lower than consulting healthcare providers or using traditional internet search engines – though many search engines are now integrating AI-generated summaries into their results .
Demographic Trends in AI Health Usage
The adoption of AI for health information isn’t uniform across all demographics. Younger adults (ages 18-29) are significantly more likely to use AI for both physical (36%) and mental (28%) health inquiries compared to those aged 50 and older (8% and 10%, respectively). Uninsured adults (30% for mental health) and adults identifying as Black (21%) or Hispanic (19%) are more likely to seek mental health advice from AI chatbots than their insured (14%) and White (12%) counterparts.
Why People Are Turning to AI for Health Advice
The primary driver for using AI for health information is the desire for quick and immediate answers, cited by 65% of users. Other significant reasons include wanting to research information before a doctor’s visit (41%), seeking privacy (36%), and receiving test results before being able to connect with a healthcare provider (28%). For some, particularly younger and lower-income individuals, difficulty accessing or affording healthcare is a major factor. Approximately 19% of AI users cite cost as a barrier to traditional care, and 18% lack a regular healthcare provider or face appointment challenges.
How AI is Being Used for Health Information
Users are employing AI in various ways to address their health concerns. 27% use AI to look up symptoms or general information about health conditions, while 19% seek explanations of medical tests, lab results, or diagnoses. Around 16% utilize AI to understand treatment options or to help decide whether to seek medical attention. For mental health, users are leveraging AI to understand conditions (11%), find coping strategies (11%), explore treatment options (10%), or simply engage in conversational support (9%).
Follow-Up Care After Using AI
A majority (58%) of those who consult AI for physical health advice subsequently follow up with a healthcare provider. However, this rate is lower for mental health (42%). Younger adults are less likely to follow up with a doctor after using AI for health information compared to older adults, potentially indicating a reliance on AI as a primary source of information.
Trust and Satisfaction with AI Health Information
While most users report satisfaction with the quality of information received from AI (92% for physical health, 85% for mental health), trust levels vary. Among those who have used AI for health advice, 69% trust AI to provide reliable health information, and 62% trust it for mental health information. However, trust is significantly lower among those who haven’t used AI, dropping to 18% and 16% respectively.
Privacy Concerns Remain High
Despite the convenience of AI health tools, privacy concerns are widespread. 77% of adults express concern about the privacy of their personal medical information when using AI chatbots. Even among those who have uploaded personal data to AI tools, 65% still harbor privacy concerns.
The Future of AI in Healthcare
As AI technology continues to evolve and grow more integrated into healthcare, addressing privacy concerns and ensuring accuracy will be paramount. The KFF poll highlights a growing trend, but also underscores the necessitate for careful consideration of the potential benefits and risks associated with relying on AI for health information. Continued research and open dialogue are crucial to navigating this rapidly changing landscape and ensuring that AI serves as a valuable tool to enhance, rather than compromise, patient care.
