80,000 Pounds of Free Potatoes Up for Grabs in Calgary This Weekend

A Calgary community group is preparing to give away 80,000 pounds of free potatoes this weekend. Guru Nanak Free Kitchen Calgary will be distributing the potatoes on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the McKnight CTrain station starting at 1 p.m. The event, dubbed “Potato Saturday,” aims to serve thousands of families across the city.

According to the organization, the potatoes are unwashed and of best quality, donated by Pritam Transport. Attendees are required to bring their own bags to help speed up distribution, and the potatoes will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Organizers say the turnout will determine how many potatoes each person can take, with the goal of distributing all 80,000 pounds by the end of the day.

Guru Nanak Free Kitchen Calgary supports hundreds of families across Calgary and the surrounding areas through large-scale food drives and community service events. The group has been providing free groceries every weekend for nine years, helping approximately 10,000 families each month.

The giveaway is part of the organization’s ongoing effort to address food insecurity in the community. Similar events have been held regularly, but this weekend’s distribution is one of the largest single-day potato giveaways in recent memory.

For those planning to attend, the organization recommends arriving early due to expected high demand. More information about the event and future distributions can be found on the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen Calgary Facebook page.
