Russian forces launched over 660 missiles and drones against Ukraine overnight, killing seven people and injuring dozens across multiple regions, whereas drone fragments caused damage in southeastern Romania.

In Dnipro, southeastern Ukraine, residential buildings were struck, killing four people and injuring 21, with 11 hospitalized, according to regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha. A follow-up strike later that morning killed an additional person in the same area.

In Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, missile and drone attacks resulted in two deaths and at least seven injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the assaults targeted civilian infrastructure, including homes, energy facilities, and businesses, using a mix of combat drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic systems.

Ukrainian air forces reported intercepting 580 of 619 drones and 30 of 47 missiles launched by Russian forces during the night. Despite the high interception rate, debris from at least two drones fell in Galati, Romania, damaging an electricity pole and a residential annex, prompting evacuations due to fears of unexploded ordnance.

Emergency services in Odessa, southern Ukraine, reported two deaths and 14 injuries from Russian strikes on residential buildings and civilian infrastructure on Friday, adding to a pattern of near-daily bombardments since the invasion began in February 2022. Odessa has been repeatedly hit, recording nine deaths on April 16 alone.

In Zaporizhzhia, a drone strike on a civilian minibus killed one person and injured four, according to regional head Ivan Fedorov. Meanwhile, a nine-year-old boy received outpatient treatment and a 17-year-old girl was hospitalized in moderate condition after attacks in Dnipropetrovsk, as shared by regional military chief Oleksandr Ganja on Telegram.

Zelensky urged international partners to act swiftly, calling for immediate reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defenses and acceleration of the 21st European Union sanctions package against Russia. He noted that delays in approving the 20th sanctions package had allowed Russian forces to adapt, increasing the urgency for new measures.

European leaders approved the 20th sanctions package on Thursday in Cyprus, targeting Russia’s banking sector and imposing new restrictions on Russian oil exports. After overcoming a Hungarian blockade, they as well authorized a €90 billion loan (approximately $97 billion) to Ukraine to support defense spending and government operations from 2026 to 2027.

During his first official visit to Baku since the invasion began, Zelensky signed six cooperation agreements with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, focusing on security and energy. The visit included exchanges between Ukrainian and Azerbaijani defense experts on air defense strategies, though specific terms were not disclosed.
