Unlike traditional posts or Stories, Instants are built around the concept of “sharing in the moment.” The feature removes the ability to upload from a camera roll or apply edits, ensuring that every photo shared is a genuine reflection of the present.

What Exactly Are Instagram Instants?

Instants are disappearing photos shared with a limited audience. These images disappear immediately after a recipient opens them and automatically expire after 24 hours. The core philosophy behind the feature is to encourage authentic interactions between smaller groups of friends rather than chasing algorithmic reach or public engagement metrics.

To maintain this focus on authenticity, Instagram has implemented several strict constraints:

• No Gallery Uploads: Users must snap photos in real time; they cannot upload existing images from their phone’s photo gallery.
• No Editing: The feature intentionally omits editing tools. While users can add a caption, they cannot modify the image before sending.

This app opens directly to the camera interface upon login with an Instagram account. Because the two apps are synced, any Instant shared via the standalone app will be visible to friends using the main Instagram app.

Privacy, Control, and Archiving

Recognizing the sensitivity of disappearing content, Instagram has introduced several privacy-centric guardrails to make users feel more secure when sharing unedited moments.

• Anti-Screenshot Protection: To prevent unauthorized saving of content, friends cannot screenshot or record the Instants shared with them.
• The Undo Button: If a photo is sent by mistake, users can quickly use the undo button to take it back before it is viewed.
