Maine Senate Race: Graham Platner Faces Rape Allegations and Calls to Drop Out

Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner is facing calls from party leaders and operatives to withdraw from the Maine Senate race following a rape accusation reported by Politico. Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, has denied the allegations, but the controversy threatens the Democratic effort to flip the seat currently held by Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Rape Allegations and Campaign Response

Jenny Racicot, a former girlfriend of Graham Platner, accused the candidate of raping her in 2021, according to reporting from Politico. Racicot previously spoke with the New York Times, where she described Platner’s behavior as “reckless” and “unsettling,” though the specific rape allegation remained off the record until the Politico report.

Platner released a campaign video denying the claims, calling the accusations “troubling, serious, and false.” His campaign further alleged that the claims were “coached and coordinated by out-of-state establishment operatives.” However, Politico noted the allegations were supported by messages Racicot sent in 2023, well before Platner entered the political arena.

Pressure to Withdraw and Ballot Deadlines

A coalition of Democratic politicians and organizations has demanded Platner drop out of the race by 5 p.m. next Monday to allow for his removal from the general election ballot. Platner has indicated he will only withdraw if he can select his own successor.

If Platner exits the race, Maine Democrats must select a replacement nominee by July 27.

History of Scandals and Vetting Failures

The rape allegation follows a series of other controversies that surfaced during Platner’s campaign. According to The Intercept, these include:

  • A Nazi tattoo, for which Platner later apologized.
  • Reddit posts in which he belittled sexual assault and questioned why Black people do not tip.
  • Posts disparaging white and rural voters.
  • Accusations from another woman that he was physically aggressive, allegedly twisting her arm and trapping her in a room.

The Strategic Divide in the Democratic Party

The Platner candidacy highlighted a rift between the Democratic establishment and a progressive wing seeking “heterodox” candidates. Carlson told The Intercept Briefing that supporters were drawn to Platner’s persona—a combat veteran and oysterman—as a way to appeal to white working-class and disaffected Trump voters, contrasting him with “establishment-type” candidates like former Governor Janet Mills.
