Northern Territory Police have released a series of previously unseen photographs from the investigation into the 2001 disappearance of British backpacker Peter Falconio to mark the 25th anniversary of the case. While Bradley John Murdoch was convicted of the murder in 2005, the location of Falconio’s remains has never been disclosed, and the investigation remains active.
New Evidence Released to Renew Public Interest
On the 25th anniversary of the crime, Northern Territory (NT) Police released images intended to generate new leads. These include a photograph of Falconio’s girlfriend, Joanne Lees, taken within 24 hours of her escape from the roadside ambush on the Stuart Highway on July 14, 2001. Other images released by investigators feature the orange Volkswagen Kombi van the couple was driving, as well as evidence markers documenting the scene of the attack.
Police also shared a photograph of Bradley John Murdoch, taken during the investigation, as part of an effort to prompt anyone who may have had contact with the killer to come forward. Despite being sentenced to life imprisonment, Murdoch maintained his innocence until his death in a Northern Territory prison on July 15, 2025.
The Status of the Ongoing Investigation
According to NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole, the investigation into the murder of Peter Falconio will remain open until his remains are recovered. Police maintain that Murdoch may have confided in a third party—such as a family member or associate—regarding the whereabouts of the body during his years in custody.
"His cowardly silence has denied the family, friends and loved ones the closure they deserve," Commissioner Dole said in a statement. "The Northern Territory Police Force remains committed to bringing this investigation to its fullest conclusion and will continue to pursue every avenue available."

Authorities continue to offer a $500,000 reward for information that leads directly to the discovery of Falconio’s remains. Investigators are specifically looking for details that may have seemed insignificant at the time but could now provide the breakthrough needed to resolve the case.
